C est toute l étendue de la conquête sous-marine qui s offre à vous. ]]></texte> <titre lg="en"><![CDATA[The city of the sea]]></titre> <texte lg="en"><![CDATA[A visit to La Cité de la Mer begins with the Ocean Exhibition. Designed in association with IFREMER, it comprises the Abyssal Aquarium and the Aquatic Galleries. The visit is organised into the four themes based upon the comments of the French explorer and naturalist, Théodore Monod, when describing his descent to the sea floor : "It's dark, it's cold, it's deep and there's nothing to eat". Visitors will learn about the ocean bed and man's epic underwater adventures, from his early descents in diving suits through to the birth of modern oceanography. Underwater archaeology is just one of the themes to be covered here. In order to illustrate research techniques, the CSS Alabama will be brought to the fore. This southern, armed merchant cruiser was sunk off the coast of Cherbourg during the American civil war. The wreck was found by the French Navy in 1984. A few of the objects brought up from the CSS Alabama will be exhibited in La Cité de la Mer, through the kind permission of the government of the USA. The prowess and limits of man's resistance when diving feature in another section of the exhibition. Visitors will discover the conditions, constraints and inherent dangers of each diving technique, whether free-diving, assisted respiration, or with the help of the submersibles required when working at great depths. Another section will be devoted to the advanced technology developed in man's exploration of the sea floor. The technical innovation applied to this field can be likened to the leading edge technology used in man's exploration of outer space.
