Taillé dans le roc de la partie haute de la cité, l Amphithéâtre s appuie sur une vaste plate-forme de 136 m de long sur 107 mètres de large. Il est formé de 60 arcades sur deux niveaux et se dresse à 21 mètres. L Amphithéâtre d Arles, construit vers l an 90, occupe le 20e rang parmi les grands amphithéâtres et pouvait accueillir 20 000 spectateurs. Combats de gladiateurs et scènes de chasse y ont été présentés jusqu à la fin du Ve siècle. Au Moyen-Âge, il servira de forteresse qui abrite 2 chapelles et 212 maisons. Il ne sera dégagé de ces constructions qu en 1825. En 1830 est organisé le premier spectacle taurin. A l initiative de Prosper Mérimée, il est classé monument historique en 1840.]]></texte> <titre lg="en"><![CDATA[Les Arènes d'Arles]]></titre> <texte lg="en"><![CDATA[The Amphitheater was built on the North side of the hill of Arles known as "L'Hauture" around the year 90 AD to hold an audience of 20,000 people. The foundations were cut out of the rock of the upper part of the city, to create a vast platform measuring 136 meters long and 107 meters wide. The building is 21 meters high and composed of 60 arches on two levels. The Arles Amphitheater, built around the year 90 AD, ranks 20th in size among the great amphitheaters and could hold 20,000 spectators. Gladiator fights and animal hunts took place here until the end of the 5th century. During the Middle Ages, the building became a fortress, sheltering two chapels and 212 houses within its walls. These parasite constructions were destroyed in 1825. The first modern bull games took place in the building in 1830.
